Review: Potomac Street Grill – Syrian Surprise in Brunswick

IMG_1816

After getting caught in the huge commuter  parking area at Brunswick, Maryland between two VERY long freight trains traveling in opposite directions, we were ready for a bite to eat!  Finding a restaurant that was open in Brunswick on a Sunday afternoon apparently isn’t the easiest thing to find.   With luck (and spotting a poster board sign tacked on the back of an SUV as we exited the parking lot!), we found the Potomac Street Grill (Curiously located on Potomac Street in downtown Brunswick more or less within walking distance of the train yards! <Wink> )

Neither particularly stylish looking, it lured us in regardless with its affordable menu (and by the fact of being open for business!)

The menu surprisingly offered a nice range of possibilities – a dozen appetizers ($7-$10), a bunch of sandwiches and wraps ($8-$12) and a good number of entrees ($14-$18 which comes with a salad and bread)

Chicken Shawarma with waffle fries

Our curiosity was whetted by the presence of a number of middle eastern offerings that we wouldn’t expect to find in a place like Brunswick – including things like “made here”  hummus” and baba ghannouj, Shawarma sandwiches, Felafel wrap, Shish Taouk, Kafta Bandura, and Lamb Kobab!   We asked our waiter about this and he explained that the owner and chef were immigrants from Syria!  Aha!  That explains it!

John ordered a chicken shawarma wrap with fries,   Jim went for a Steak & Cheese sandwich, while both Tom and Paul ordered Lamb Gyro sandwiches (All $8.50 and included your choice of waffle fries, regular fries, fruit, rice, or chips – We went with our waiter’s suggestion on the waffle fries)

All of our sandwiches proved way better than average.   Bless that waiter for his suggestion – the waffle fries were really good.  They had a bit spiciness to them that none of us could figure out – on the way out, we asked one of the owners and she told us that they dusted the fries lightly with a secret Syrian ingredient – Maryland Old Bay! <Wink>

Our waiter was friendly and attentive and we really enjoyed our late lunch at the Potomac Street Grill.  John gave it a Thumbs Up!  He suggests that if you’re out near Brunswick, MD and looking for a good place to eat that you remember the Potomac Street Grill !
